ERCC resident celebrates 103rd birthday

ELKINS — Hazel Hart Hanger celebrated her 103rd birthday Feb. 8 with family and friends at Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center.

In addition to her family and friends, Elkins Mayor Van Broughton attended the event. He presented Mrs. Hanger with the key to the city of Elkins.

“Mrs. Hanger is a joy to have at our facility,” said Tara Shaver, ERCC administrator. “We’re very pleased to have her here at ERCC.”

Mrs. Hanger was born Feb. 9, 1917, on Chenoweth Creek, the daughter of the late Wade and Mabel Isner Hart. She had one brother, the late Arnold Wilson Hart.

On Oct. 16, 1939, she married the late Virgil C. “Ikey” Hanger. They had three children, Rebecca Shomo Hintz, Mary Jane Bertelli, and the late Bobby Hanger. She has one grandson, Scott Shomo, and wife, Danielle; three great-granddaughters, Brooke, Nicole, and Khaleesi Shomo; one great-grandson, Christian Neal Shomo; one stepgranddaughter, Christina Bertelli Coleman; and a niece, Jeanne Gardner Hart, who made her home with the Hanger family.

Mrs. Hanger is a member of the Elkins Church of God and Family Worship Center, where she served as Sunday school secretary for 70 years until her retirement. Her favorite hobby is watching TV.
