98th Birthday

Moran

Lorraine Moran of Elkins celebrated her 98th birthday surrounded by family at the Massanutten Resort in Massanutten, Virginia.

The birthday celebration began with dinner at Jimmy Madison’s Southern Kitchen in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and continued at the Massanutten Resort with a rainbow party theme. Later in the week, visits to the White Oak Lavender and Purple Wolf Vineyards and the Marceline Vineyards were enjoyed.

While visiting and reconnecting with each other, the family enjoyed the scenic chairlift to the top of Massanutten and hiking to the summit, walking the trails, golfing, go-karting, miniature golfing, fishing, shopping, cooking and family game nights.

Mrs. Moran was born July 10, 1923, in Upshur County, to William and Lavinia Poling. On July 13, 1943, she married John H. Moran Jr. in Rockville, Illinois. John Moran Jr. was a member of the U.S. Army Air Core and later the U.S. Army 8th Division, 121st Infantry. During World War II, he served in the European Theatre, earning a Bronze Star, two Battle Stars and a Purple Heart. John H. Moran Jr. died in July 1956.

Mrs. Moran is the mother of three daughters, Linda Sharon Collins, Greta Kuhl and Vera Hammond. She has six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Family members surrounding Lorraine on her 98th birthday celebration were Linda Collins of Elkins; Jim Collins of Asheville, North Carolina; Carole and Tim Surgent of Neptune, New Jersey; Cathi and PJ Champino and children, Max and Gabi of Lakeland, Florida; Vera Hammond of Fayetteville, North Carolina; John and Jennifer Hammond and children, Noah and Lyla of Greenville, North Carolina; Nancy Gatewood of Woodbridge, Virginia; Greta and Kenna Kuhl of Canal Fulton, Ohio; Cindy Kuhl and daughters Tori and Lexi of New Pittsburg, Ohio; and Confesor Badillo of Elyria, Ohio.

Mrs. Moran is a former Randolph County Belle and is currently a member of the John Hart Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of Nays Chapel near Sand Run in Upshur County, the Weavers Guild, Rebekah Lodge 98, and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 3647. She enjoys playing bingo, sewing, crocheting, embroidering, weaving baskets and chair bottoms, gardening, doing word search puzzles, reading, walking, traveling and spending time with her family and friends.
