Barbara Jane Bucy Hinchman

Barbara Jane Bucy Hinchman, of Troy, Ohio, will celebrate her 100th birthday on New Year’s Eve.

She was born in Elkins on Dec. 31, 1921, to the late Henry W. and Jennie Thorne Bucy. Her father was a train conductor for many years with Western Maryland until his retirement. Growing up in Bevery, when 8-years-old, Hinchman went to live with her relatives Hazel and Howard Thorne on their Beverly farm, which was located on the Georgetown Road.

She attended the schools in Beverly and graduated from Beverly High School with the class of 1939. She graduated from Davis & Elkins College with the class of 1943 with a degree in education.

In 1943, she was married to Robert Lee Hinchman, who passed away in 1991. During World War II, she lived in Indiana, while Bob served in the U.S. Navy. The had one son, Randall Hinchman, who passed away in 2008.

Following several years as a substitute teacher in the area schools, in 1955 she and her husband moved to Washington, Court House, Ohio. She completed a 36-year career in teaching before retiring in 1988 at Miami Trace High School. Both Bob and Barbara were lifelong teachers.
