Robert Joe Harman

Robert Joe Harman will celebrate his 90th birthday on March 8.

He was born March 8, 1933, in Elkins a son of the late Dickson and Icie Harman. He was married to the love of his life, the late Virginia Lee Fansler. They celebrated 60 years of marriage on Aug. 177, 2022.

Joe worked for Monongahela Power Company for 34 years as a crewman and retired in 1996. He proudly served his country in the West Virginia National Guard 201st Field Artillery Battalion for 39 years, including serving in Operation Desert Storm and retired as a first sergeant.

He is a lifetime member of the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and served as post commander in 2004.

He was honored to receive The Chapel of Four Chaplains Legion of Honor award in 2008 for his giving spirit and unconditional service to his community, nation and humanity regardless of race or religion. He also was honored with the Blue Cap Legionnaire of the Year Award in 2016 for his years of service, dedication and leadership to Post 29, Little Arlington Cemetery and his community.

He has been the caretaker of the American Legion's Little Arlington Cemetery for 25 years. He is a lifetime member of Post 3647 VFW and a lifetime member of the Elks Club. He is a member of the Elkins First Church of the Nazarene.

He has two daughters, Kathy Hamrick and husband, Tommy, and Roberta Brown and husband, Dan, all of Elkins. He has two step-children, Gary Brown and wife, Lynnlee, and Samantha Casas and husband, Robert. He has one grandson, Tyler Hamrick; and seven great-grandchildren, Gavin, Ariella and Abby Brown, and Brayden, Amara, Daniella and Samuel Casas. Cards may be sent to PO Box 412, Elkins, WV 26241.
