Mrs. Lorraine Moran of Elkins, formerly of Kerens, recently became a centenarian as she celebrated her 100th birthday on July 10, 2023.
The festivities began with a reception held in the Allegheny Room at The Wingate by Wyndham in Elkins, on July 8.
Many family members and neighbors from Elkins, Kerens, and the surrounding areas joined in the celebration that day. People gathered for refreshments of cake and cookies, decorated with Irish themes, cheese trays, vegetable trays, and punch. The tables were set with Irish flowers and pictures of the guest of honor and her family. Many stories of old were shared and enjoyed among the guests and the room was filled with laughter and joy.
The next day the family traveled to Lake Gaston, Virginia, for a week of continued celebrations. The family enjoyed swimming, paddle boarding, fishing, boating, board games, good food, and good conversations among the four generations gathered to honor their centenarian!

Mrs. Moran was born July 10, 1923, in Upshur County to William and Lavinia Poling. On June 13, 1943, in Rockford, Illinois, she married John H. Moran, Jr., a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps, and later the US Army, 8th Division, 121st Infantry. During World War II, he served in the European Theater, earning for his service, among other commendations, the Bronze Star, two battle stars, and the Purple Heart. They were married for 13 years and had three daughters, Linda, Greta, and Vera before his untimely death due to illness in July 1956.
Mrs. Moran is a former Randolph County Belle and is currently a member of the John Hart Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of Nay Chapel United Methodist Church near Sand Run in Upshur County, and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 3647. She enjoys walking, gardening, reading, sewing, traveling, doing word search puzzles, canning fruits and vegetables, and spending time with family and friends.
Mrs. Moran has witnessed many historic events, new inventions, advanced technology, and improved medical care over the last 100 years. She gives God the glory for having reached this milestone birthday and her advice for a long life is to "keep moving, eat smart, and keep the faith."
