Winter is here in Barbour County

Hello from Barbour County!

Brrrr… I think it’s almost winter time, ready or not.

As the work crew begins their destruction of the former Sheetz gas station site in Belington this week, removing the underground fuel tanks, we have more sad news, this time from the Philippi direction. Medallion Restaraunt has announced plans to close their doors on Dec. 20. The Medallion has been in business for the past 32 years. The business is currently for sale, and may be a great opportunity for someone looking to open a food establishment.

Congratulations to Rich Rodriguez who was hired as head coach for WVU football. Best wishes to the team this upcoming season.

Belington Board of Parks is having a Christmas Lights Competition. If you think that you have the best decorated house, submit your pictures to Belington BOP Facebook page messenger. All pictures will be posted, and the ones with the most “likes” will win the People’s Choice Award. Include your address in the message, and the judges will drive around to see the lights in person and declare a Judge’s Choice prize. All winners will be announced on Dec. 23.

Belington Board of Parks will be having a Winter Market craft/vendor show at the Belington Civic Center, today, Dec.14 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. There will be a hot cocoa bar, Christmas picture station, and a special guest appearance.

Also, today, Belington Elementary School will be having a craft show from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. There will be crafters and vendors from all over West Virginia, as well as an auction, raffle, cookie decorating, paint party, and more.

Today is also National Wreaths Across America Day. Join local representatives at Belington Fraternal Cemetary at noon, along with many others across the U.S. as they honor Veterans on this day. It truly is a memorable event.

Asbury United Methodist Church will be having their Belington Community Christmas Cantata on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 7 pm. Members of area churches are joining with the Asbury choir to present “God’s Blessings of Christmas.” All are welcome for an evening of worship and song. Refreshments will follow in the fellowship hall.

Also, Sunday, Faith Way Baptist Church will be having their Children’s Christmas Play beginning at 6:30 p.m. On Sunday, Dec. 22, at 6:30 p.m., the Faith Way adults will be performing their Christmas Cantata, “Season of Light.” Everyone is welcome to attend.

On Sunday from 2-6 p.m., there will be a Cookies & Cocoa Christmas Sale at the Barbour County Fairgrounds in the quonset hut. This is sponsored by the Barbour County Fairgrounds Farmers Market. There will be a wide assortment of cookies as well as hot cocoa for sale.

Also, on Sunday, come out to Skatezone in Belington and roller skate with the Grinch and the Elf from 2-4 p.m. Admission is $6, with $1 skate rental. Don’t forget to get a picture with them!

There will be a Christmas Stroll in downtown Philippi on Dec. 19 from 6-9 p.m. Join in and stroll along Philippi’s charming Main Street, as you browse the local restaurants and shops, enjoying Christmas music and soak in all the holiday cheer.
