ELKINS -- The Elkins Composite Squadron is hosting an open house from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Elkins-Randolph County Regional Airport. According to Squadron Commander Maj. Kathleen Dawson, the entire community is welcome to attend and learn more about CAP.
Members of the squadron will be present to greet visitors, and there will be various stations and displays to explain CAP's missions for America.
Charged with missions of emergency services, aerospace education and cadet programs, the all-volunteer force is for members 12 years old and older.
Capt. Debbie Tysor, Public Affairs Officer for the squadron stated, "This a wonderful program for young people. They can go to summer encampment and fly in a Black Hawk helicopter, attend National Cadet Special Activities, fly with one of our pilots during an Orientation Flight, learn Search and Rescue skills, fly drones, build rockets, and so much more! As they advance through our program, they can receive scholarships for activities, flight lessons and even college. It is a truly unique and fun-filled program."
Civil Air Patrol is the longtime all-volunteer U.S. Air Force auxiliary and the newest member of the Air Force's Total Force. CAP's more than 65,000 members also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. In addition, CAP plays a leading role in aerospace/STEM education, and its members serve as mentors to nearly 28,000 young people participating in CAP's Cadet Programs.
