Expanding our police force is this week's top theme. Today, the Elkins Police Civil Service Commission is running physical fitness and written testing of candidates to fill three officer vacancies. On Tuesday at 9 a.m. (note time/date change), council's Finance Committee discusses funding a new officer position through a federal COPS Hiring Program grant.

On Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Darden House (204 Davis Avenue), Elkins Tree Board presents a public program, "What's Happening to My Trees?" Join Linda Burke, U.S. Forest Service silviculturist and Tree Board member, to learn about identifying and dealing with tree diseases, infestations, and other common tree-related problems.

On Thursday at 5:30 p.m. council's Economic Growth and Development Committee continues consideration of future potential annexation projects.

The agenda for Thursday's 7 p.m. council meeting is not yet complete. Items include ongoing discussions of police hiring and the adoption of updated versions of the West Virginia Building Code and Floodplain Management Ordinance after minor changes.
