Next week's events include meetings of council's Public Safety Committee and Personnel Committee. The regularly scheduled Rules and Ordinances Committee meeting has been canceled.
To kick the week off, the Public Safety Committee meets at 10 a.m. on Monday to consider the creation of a standalone code enforcement position. One reason the committee is looking at this is because the update of our city's zoning laws, which is nearing completion, is expected to increase code enforcement workloads.
Also on Monday, at 1 p.m., the Personnel Committee works on designing a process for performance evaluations of the city's administrative officers (i.e., the city clerk, the fire and police chiefs, the operations manager, and the treasurer). Another item on the agenda is initial consideration of a proposal to create an urban landscaper position.
This week, the Elkins Police Civil Service Commission interviews entry-level police applicants who passed last week's physical-fitness and written tests. The Airport Authority meets Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Elkins-Randolph County Regional Airport (400 Airport Road).
Work continues on the police department renovations. Phase 1 is complete and excellent progress is being made on the second and final phase. Once the renovations are finished, the department will take delivery of new furniture built by Huttonsville Correctional Center inmates through the West Virginia Correctional Industries (WVCI) program. This program supplies high-quality furniture at low cost to State agencies, county school systems, and political sub-divisions (like City of Elkins).
