ELKINS — Next week, the Elkins council canvasses the election and council’s Finance Committee continues budget work. The regularly scheduled meeting of council’s Rules & Ordinances Committee is canceled.

On Monday at 11 a.m., council convenes in public session at the Phil Gainer Community Center as the Board of Canvassers to canvass the recent city election. The purpose of a canvass is to account for all cast and unused ballots, consider provisional ballots, and release the “declared” election results.

Forty-eight hours after conclusion of the canvass, council may certify results in all wards where recounts have not been requested. The certification meeting is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., but this might change if the canvass runs long. More here: http://www.cityofelkinswv.com/whats-a-canvass.

The Finance Committee meets Tuesday at 5 p.m. On the agenda: further work on the FY 2022 budget and consideration of a proposal to expand the number of the Elkins Fire Department’s civil-service firefighter positions from 7 to 9.

First-due fire-protection service fees are due Monday to avoid assessment of late fees. Water shutoffs commence Tuesday for past-due accounts.
