Lions Club welcomes District Governor
ELKINS — The Elkins Lions Club welcomed District Governor John Mason at the Steer Steakhouse Monday.
The District Governor started his speech by sharing the international theme for the year, “United in Kindness and Diversity,” and the District Governor’s theme: “In A World Where You Can be Anything, Be Kind.”
The Elkins Club was privileged to have him recount the story which redefined his perspective on what it means to be a Lion. He shared one of his Santa Claus stories which left a lump in everyone’s throat, about a little girl who climbed in his lap and asked for her father back.
Sadly, her father was killed in the war and buried a week prior. Her little brother asked for a bike and their mom could not afford it so Santa encouraged him to keep growing and ask again next year! When the little girl asked for the return of her late father, her mother in tears scooped her up and left abruptly. Everyone, saddened by the little girl’s request, gathered at the family’s door the next day with extra presents, a bike and the stubborn love of lions.
Mason concluded by reemphasizing three principals for West Virginia Lions: “Be patient, positive and kind!”
Mason became a member of the Berkeley Springs Lions Club in March 2006, where he learned about Lionism from his sponsor PDG Ed Weber. He married his college sweetheart Kim Fry in 1985. They have one son and one daughter, both Lions.

He worked for ADP for 20 years and retired in October 2018. The family opened a restaurant on Dec 29, 2019. The restaurant is called Charlotte’s Cafe.
He has served in several different capacities in the Berkeley Springs Lions Club: President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Secretary, and Club Membership Chair, and has served on the Club’s Board of Directors for five years.
In June 2017, he was asked by then District Governor Ken Shahan to serve as Zone 1 Chairperson. In April 2018, District Governor Rob Bright asked Mason to take the next step to become Second Vice DG.
During 2019-2020, he served as District Secretary under DG Ruth Straley. Lions John and Kim Mason attended the LCI International Convention in 2018 and the USA/Canada Forum in 2018. In 2019, he completed the bachelor’s program through Lions University. In 2020, he completed his master’s program.
