ELKINS --The Emma Scott Garden Club met on March 14 at the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church, 450 Randolph Ave., Elkins with 32 members present. The meeting was called to order by President Linda Shomo.

Under old business, recognition was given to area Yards of the Month for the July, August and October (Fall Yards) 2021.

Winners for July 2021 were Citizen's Bank of WV (Business Award), Naomi and Dick Pennington, Dry Fork (President's Regional Award) and Sherri Smith, Amy and Dennis Kittle, Charlene and Dave Mace, Liz and Chris Marshall-MacVean (Elkins Awards).

August 2021 winners were Carte-Hall CPA's (Business Award), Paula and Nils Heinke, Woodridge (President's Regional Award) and Theresa and Steve Birk, Robin George, Kim and Ryan Urban, Barbara Carr and Bob Mothershed (Elkins Awards).

October or Fall 2021 awards were given to Jennings Randolph Elementary (Business Award), Betty and Russ Linger (President's Award) and Vanessa and Shane Halle, Cindy and Carl Nucilli, Renee and Dr. Tom Benz, Susie and Bob Higgins (Elkins Awards). YOM Awards were presented by YOM members Joann Gabel and Donna Isner.

During the new business session, it was announced that the West Virginia Garden Club conference was to be held at Canaan Valley Resort on April 1, 2 and 3. Shomo requested that five volunteers form a committee to create a logo for ESGC and present their design at the April 11 meeting. A sign-up sheet was passed to recruit members to receive/organize and price plants for the May 14 Plant Sale to be held at the Randolph County Community Arts Center.

Following a refreshment break, Judy Guye Swanson introduced the guest speaker Gwen Kohut, West Virginia Garden Club, Inc. Flower Show Judge, who presented the program "Tips on Preparing for a Flower Show." Kohut gave members an extensive handout outlining different kinds of flower shows according to the National Garden Club guidelines (standard, small standard, youth standard, youth small standard, Horticulture specialty, design specialty).

Categories of shows were listed as general, petite, holiday and patriotic, show sponsored with a plant society and major flower show. The division possibilities are horticulture, design, education, youth and botanical arts. Horticulture and design are required.

Kohut further elaborated on what is expected in the two required divisions. The point systems used in judging displays and designs was reviewed to help participants understand the judging system. Several resource books of pictorial designs were also shared by the presenter.

Kohut showed a design she created a using small potted succulents on a staggered tiered stand while club member, Becky Amorese, had prepared a monochromatic, line design of pine, spike leaves, rhododendron and vine.

Kohut invited ESGC members to participate in a flower show to occur at Quiet Dell United Methodist Church on Saturday, June 4 from 1-3 pm. To enter call Kohut at 304-623-1927 or 304-204-2545.

Announcements were made that members, Ed and Carol Daniels would hold a Plant a Seed program on March 20 at the Seneca Mall Atrium from 2-4 p.m. ESGC would be participating.

Katy McClane presented a list of spring gardening and tree related events. Events include a river clean up at Coalton on March 26 beginning at 9 a.m.; pruning and grafting workshop at Kump House, March 26, 2 p.m.; Can You Dig It Workshop on April 9 at Elkins City Park from 2-5 p.m.; Earth Day Tree Planting at Elkins City Park at 11 a.m.; Arbor Day Tree Planting at Glendale Park at 2 p.m.; National Arbor Day tree planting with local Girl Scouts at 5 p.m. with site TBA; Earth Day Celebration with Randolph County Democratic Women at the City Park from noon-3 p.m.; Darden Gardens Clean up on May 23 at 10 a.m. For further information about these events contact McClane at 304-591-4407.

Bobbi Trimboli announced that Our Town, Inc will have a Welcome Spring family oriented activity from noon-1:30 in the Atrium at the Seneca Mall with various volunteer groups presenting information and children's activities, door prizes and give ways.
