ELKINS -- For the past two months, elementary school students have gathered at The Old Brick Playhouse in downtown Elkins to participate in Adventure Camp, a two-hour science and theatre workshop.
Designed around days when students have an early dismissal from public school, workshops take place from 1-3 p.m. and couple dynamic science experiments together with theme-appropriate acting exercises.
In this project, the Old Brick Playhouse has teemed up with Eric Eisenbrey, Director of Eyes and Brains STEM Center.
"Eric brings extensive experience in a hands-on approach to teaching science" said OBP Assistant Director Phil Smith. "During the last workshop we had exploding ghosts flying high into the rafters of our workshop."
In September, science experiments were focused on how leaves change color and students also made their own functional thermometer. During the acting portion of the September event, students read, acted out and dawned costume pieces, from the original children's play "Pricilla and the Wood Elf" written by OBP Director Missy McCollam.
The October event took on an eerie tone with flying ghosts and glow in the dark bubbles. Acting students created their own characters and produced small puppet shows in the OBP puppet theatre. Finally, November will be centered on the science of food in honor of Thanksgiving, and Adventure actors will present small plays focused on Comedy in the Kitchen with a special appearance of a certain hilarious Turkey.
"Adventure workshops will continue through-out the school year and we still availability for the November session," said OBP Executive Director Missy Armentrout McCollam. "In my opinion, enrolling children in these workshops would be a fantastic Christmas gift for students grades 1-5."
