Elkins hosts gymnastics meet at MGA

ELKINS -- Gymnasts from Maverick Gymnastics Club in Charleston and Flipstarz in Beaver joined host Mountain Gymnastics Academy for a recent competition.
Flipstarz's Xcel Bronze Team took first place over a strong MGA squad by 3/10ths of one point with a score of 112.45 to MGA's 112.15. The team score in the Xcel Silver division was even closer, with Flipstarz edging out MGA by 5/100ths of a point with a score of 112.3 to MGA's 112.25.
With over 80 gymnasts competing there were many individual highlights.
Rory High, Payton Shahan, Ava-Lynn Paugh, Alison Judy, Maya Stokes, Lily Hayes, Alexis Riffle, Hailey Bremigan, L Raschella, Acelynn Harris and Briana Hollen scored above 36 in the all-around. In order to score above 36 in the all-around, gymnasts must average 9.0 or better out of a possible 10 points in all 4 events: vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise.
While scoring above 36 is impressive, Kaylee Long, Kali Henderson, Ava McBee, Addisyn Grubb and Serenity Shipley-Tackett posted scores above 37 in the all-around.
Many gymnasts carded personal best scores on individual events. In addition, the following MGA gymnasts posted their best all-around scores of the season: Acelynn Harris, Adalynn Cooper, Addie Grubb, Alexis Riffle, Allison Judy, Ava McBee, Ava-Lynn Paugh, Briana Hollen, Esme Heckler, Hailey Bremigan, Kali Henderson, Kami Saffle, Kaylee Long, Maya Stokes, Pepper Arbogast and Rory High.
Owner and head coach Gail Hayes was extremely happy with the outcome of the meet.
"It was thrilling to have other teams come to Elkins to compete at our gym," she said. "We received lots of compliments from the judges and other coaches about the meet, and we plan to host even more teams next year."
When asked if there were any challenges to hosting a meet of this type, Hayes responded, "There are a lot of mandatory requirements for hosting a meet, most of which revolve around gymnast safety," Hayes said. "Our meet director, Alison White, handled all of that.
"In addition we had a meet committee who managed everything else with the help of lots of volunteers. There were some unexpected setbacks of course, but everyone just stepped up, pitched in and took care of things as they came up. I couldn't be happier."
MGA was slated to compete in the WV State Gymnastics Meet at West Virginia State University over the weekend.
