ELKINS -- During the month of April, the GFWC Junior Woman's Club of Elkins and the GFWC Randolph County Juniorettes held a pinwheel coloring contest among the first-grade students in Randolph County.
The coloring contest was designed to help spread awareness of the Pinwheel; a symbol used for Child Abuse Prevention Month.
A total of 250+ coloring sheets were distributed among all of the Randolph County Elementary Schools, with the exception of Pickens for not having any first graders at this time.
The Juniors and Juniorettes received a total of 146 completed coloring sheets from seven of the nine elementary schools in Randolph County: Beverly, Third Ward, Harman, Midland, Coalton, Georgeward, and Jennings-Randolph. North Elementary decided to not participate.
All Pinwheels are able to be viewed by going to the GFWC Junior Woman's Club of Elkins Facebook page and viewing the Virtual Pinwheel Garden link.
The Juniors and Juniorettes set up prizes for first, second and third place winners, which were chosen from all of the first-grade entries in the county. Winners were announced last week and their prizes were delivered to the winning schools on May 15.
Their Prize Package was a basket filled with various art supplies: crayons, pencils, chalk, coloring books, markers, small artistic projects, and a blue flower pinwheel.
The winners were:
First place: Alayna Kimbrew, Midland Elementary;
Second place: Leo Talbott, Third Ward Elementary; and
Third place: Addyson Pyles, Midland Elementary.
