Students spent time with an observatory educator and learned about radio waves, radio interference, the electronmagnetic spectrum, hydrogen in the universe and how radio telescopes work.
Students at Highland Adventist School learned about radio astronomy during an overnight trip to the Green Bank Observatory recently.
After a scavenger hunt in the Observatory science center, an introductory movie in the auditorium, and a bus tour of the telescopes, the students spent time with an observatory educator and learned about radio waves, radio interference, the electromagnetic spectrum, hydrogen in the universe and how radio telescopes work.
During the night hours students used the 40-foot telescope to collect data that they analyzed with observatory staff the next morning.
"This was an amazing experience for our students. We are so fortunate to have an outstanding scientific organization such as the Green Bank Observatory in our area," stated Cheryl Jacko, principal.
"Our students and staff want to express our thanks to the Observatory staff for making this huge contribution to the STEM learning of our students."
