ELKINS -- The summer months opened for the Emma Scott Garden Club with Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco reading the National Garden Club Proclamation for National Garden Week and participating at a ribbon cutting event at the Youth Relocation Center.
Member Summer Swanson has taken the leadership position in educating students of the local Youth Relocation Center about landscape design using perennial native butterfly flowers and annuals. Students of the center have been active in every step of the process which resulted in two Waystation Butterfly Gardens at the South Davis location. Members Linda Shomo and Renee Benz harvested milkweed plants from an earlier pollinator garden established by ESGC at Midland school and brought to the site.
Other members Lucinda Barrick and Katy McClane, along with Tom and Renee Benz, donated flowers and assisted in the planting in the garden areas. The highlight of the event was the fist visit of a swallowtail butterfly.
Three young people who attend the After School Program at the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church were guided by the program director and ESGC member, Monica Varchetto, to became winners in the West Virginia Garden Club Youth Poetry Contest. State winners were Brandon Funk, Quinn Broschart and Corrina Burkart. Brandon and Corrina also won at the South Atlantic Region awards. All winners received certificates and a monetary award.
Club members helped with the Elkins Randolph County Library's summer reading program on two separate occasions by reading stories to children and family members that were present along with providing follow up activities. Participating ESGC members were Barbara Campbell, Renee Benz, Linda Shomo, Bobbi Trimboli and Debbie Sheehan.

were present to assist with WV's birthday celebration and Wild Wonderful Forest Heritage event at the Kump Education Center.
Thirty-three ESGC members and friends attended the club's annual garden tour with guide Katy McClane, garden club member and family property owner. Katy lead the group through the enchanting property at Raven Ring at Gladwin, WV explaining her goal to "Help Native Plants Compete with Non-native Invasive Plants", the title of her presentation. She explained that as she has removed invasive plants such as barberry, autumn olive, multi-flora rose and stilt grass, she has allowed native plants to flourish on this land.
The rushing waters of the Glady River and the Dry Fork set a calm background for the stone walkways that encircle the property and are an important component of the serenity garden area. Structures on the property included a gate/guest house and the home where Katy's mother and artist, Joan Crawford, lived.
The influence of Ms. Crawford's creative spirit was reflected inside and outside at every turn. Words cannot express the uniqueness of the experience; only the eye and mind can digest the aura surrounding this area rich in plant life and nature's power and beauty. The afternoon ended with a picnic where members sat around a large stone table that could accommodate any large gathering or found scattered tables along the water's edge or in the solarium.
