EDITOR'S NOTE: The Datebook is reserved for nonprofit, civic organizations. Unless otherwise noted, events listed should be considered free and open to the public. Because of numerous entries, items may appear for only one week. Entries appear in chronological order and as there is space. The deadline for submissions is 4 p.m.

OUR TOWN SCARECROW EVENT: Scarecrows will be distributed from the Dann Building on Saturday from 1-4 p.m. (during Art Walk). Must be present to pick up materials; no early reservations. Return finished scarecrows to Dann Building on Sept.  8 from 4-6:30 p.m.. Scarecrows removed from the streets on Sept. 30. If you want yours back you are responsible to remove it before 9 a.m. that morning. For more information, call 304-636-0415.

HOMECOMING: The annual homecoming at Harrison Community Church at Mabie will be held on Sunday. The day will begin at 10 a.m. with Sunday School and a fellowship dinner will follow in the pavilion around noon.  An afternoon service will begin around 2 p.m. with special singing by the Kerm Lanham group from Buckhannon.  Rev. Jerry Murrell of Buckhannon will be the guest speaker.  Rev. Sean Barnett welcomes all to attend.

ELKINS MARINE CORP LEAGUE: will host their monthly meeting 6 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Steer Steakhouse. The group is currently recruiting new members. For more information, call Greg Irwin at 304-704-5758.

ELKINS PURPLE MAJESTIES: will crown a new queen on Sept. 11 at Stonewall Jackson Resort. The crowning of the queen will take place at 11:30 a.m. A buffet lunch will begin at noon. Please make reservations by calling Connie Collins at 304-478-4710.

CAMP HOPE BENEFIT DINNER: will be Saturday, Sept. 16,  from noon to 7 p.m. at  Crim Memorial United Methodist Church, 78 Pike Street Philippi, WV 26416, You can call for advanced tickets at 304-366-8345. The meal will consist of Uncle V's Kickin' Chicken smoked on site and sides.

HOUSE TOUR TUESDAYS: Free public tours of the historic Kump House continue every Tuesday afternoon from 3-5 p.m. throughout the summer. New Wild, Wonderful Woods interpretive displays and upstairs rooms are included in the tour. The house is located at 401 Randolph Ave., Elkins (across from Kroger) and parking is available in the rear, accessible via Seneca Road. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged. MSFF GRAND FEATURE PARADE SEATS: Forest Festival Grand Feature Parade seats will be available at Otterbein United Methodist Church at 1100 South Davis Avenue in Elkins. The seats will go on sale on Tuesday, Sept. 5. Parade seats may be reserved by calling the church office at 304-636-0569 Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. All seats must be paid for by Monday, Oct. 2.

PICKIN' IN THE PARK: Pickin' in the Park will take place each week at Elkins City Park on Wednesday nights through the summer. Co-sponsored by the Augusta Heritage Center and Elkins Parks and Recreation. The Country Music Jam Sessions start at 4:30 p.m. in the Small Pavilion, and the Old-Time Music Jam Sessions start at 6:30 p.m. in the raised Sycamore Street Pavillion. Both events run for at least two hours and are welcome to continue until the musicians are ready to stop. All acoustic instruments are welcome, as well as singers, dancers, and listeners. Those who can bring a chair and a flashlight may find it helpful to do so. For more information, call 304-642-2369.

USED BOOK SALE: The Friends of the Library Used Book Sale and Donation drop off. Every Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Davis Avenue location of the Library.  Donations of gently used books, movies, games, and puzzles also taken at this time.  All funds collected will go towards the new building fund.

TOPS 0590 MILL CREEK: meets at the Russell Memorial Library in Mill Creek every Wednesday. Weigh-in is from 10:30-10:45 a.m. Meeting following weigh in. For information contact Jane Robinson at 304 338-6403.
