PHILIPPI -- A wonderful day was spent at the Adaland Mansion in Philippi as four local garden clubs met for its district meeting on Sept. 14.
The Tygart Valley District of the West Virginia Garden Clubs, Inc. (WVGCI) consists of the Emma Scott Garden Club in Elkins, the Fred Brooks Garden Club in Buckhannon, the Mountaineer Garden Club in Parsons and the Stargazer Garden Club in Rock Cave.
The 30 members who attended were also joined by Martha Hilton, President of the WVGCI as well as other officers of the state. The morning business meeting was conducted by Tygart Valley District Director Patricia Mayes and she thanked the Emma Scott Garden Club (ESGC) for hosting the event.
The Garden club creed was led by Beth Post, President of the Fred Brooks Garden Club, and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by ESGC President Linda Shomo.
After approving the minutes presented by Teresa Smith, secretary and budget for the year presented by Treasurer Jason Jett, each club president gave an update on the past year's activities as well as forthcoming events.
Assistant Director Faith Moore announced the district's annual award winners. ESGC won first place in both the Yearbook Category and the Evergreen Youth Award for its Youth Relocation Center Pollinator Gardens; Fred Brooks won first place for the Garden Therapy Award for its many projects helping people through gardening activities; and Mountaineer Garden Club won the Attendance Award for largest percentage of members attending the meeting.
Shomo announced ESGC's newly created Scholarship Program and explained its guidelines. WVGCI President Martha Hilton gave each club president a packet of information and spoke on the president's membership challenge, state scholarships and requested volunteers to serve on state committees.
Mayes presented Hilton a thank-you gift announcing that a $150 donation in her honor was given to the C. Fred Edwards Plant Conservatory at the Huntington Museum of Art.
After the invocation was given by Carolyn Patterson, the attendees enjoyed a delicious homemade lunch provided by the Adaland staff.
After lunch, a brief history of the mansion was given by docent Melanee Shackelford and then a tour of the mansion and grounds were led by Shackelford and docent Linda Proudfoot.
Next year's district meeting will be hosted by the Fred Brooks Garden Club in Buckhannon.
