HAS teachers attend convention

ELKINS -- Highland Adventist School teachers traveled to Phoenix, Arizona in August to attend
a national teacher's convention along with nearly 6,000 other educators.
The event, held once every five years by the Adventist School system, is a huge professional gathering of educators from across North America. This year's theme was "Something Better". Keynote speakers focused on various aspects of what something better would look like for students this year.
2022 Texas Teacher of the Year Mario Acosta presented principles of excellence found in high reliability schools. Pastor Alex Bryant, president of the Adventist church in North America, talked about how this can be a year of "Something Better" spiritually for both educators and students and called for a recommitment to serving students.
Robyn Jackson, CEO of Mindsteps, internationally known motivational speaker Kim Stroebel, humorist Phil
Callaway, and others all joined in calling for educational excellence. In addition to the motivational general sessions, there were hundreds of small breakout sessions to choose from that covered almost every aspect of practice for the classroom teacher and the administrator.
"Although we were in Phoenix during some of the hottest weather of the year, we all agreed the information and inspiration we received was well worth the trip," said Cheryl Jacko, H.A.S. principal. "It is real blessing for us
here at Highland Adventist School, to be part of the highly acclaimed Adventist school system. That affiliation provides us with many advantages and much support in providing the high level of creative, Christian education
we have come to expect of ourselves. We are honored to serve the local community in this way."
The Adventist school system serves more than 2 million students worldwide and is the second largest Christian school system in the world. Highland Adventist School is in its 35th year of operation serving Elkins and the surrounding area for students in grades PK-12.
