12-HOUR BASEMENT SALE: First United Methodist Church will host a 12-hour basement sale Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Proceeds benefit mission projects of United Women in Faith. Grab bags will be available 7-8 p.m.
HOUSE TOUR TUESDAYS: The historic Kump House will be open to the public Tuesday afternoons from Sept. 26-Oct. 24 from 3-5 p.m. An additional Forest Festival Open House will be Thursday, Oct. 5 from 3-5 p.m. New Wild, Wonderful Woods interpretive displays and upstairs rooms are included in the tour as well as a self-guided Tree Walk. The house is located at 401 Randolph Ave., Elkins (across from Kroger) and parking is available in the rear, accessible via Seneca Road. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged. ART EXHIBIT: The Arts Center will host the MSFF Fall Juried Art Exhibition in the Great Hall Gallery. Teresa Mason has a solo exhibit titled, "What You See" in the Maxwell Gallery. The opening reception is set for Wednesday, Oct. 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibits will be open Thursday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct 6, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 7, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Oct. 10 to Oct 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
OPEN HOUSE: The annual Open House for Alumni of Elkins High School will be held on Friday from 6-9 p.m. in the upstairs of the American Legion Hall in downtown Elkins. All Elkins High School Alumni and friends are invited to stop by to meet former classmates. Light refreshments will be served and there will be door prize drawings throughout the evening. Bring your friends and join in the festivities before and during the Fireman's Parade.
WEST VIRGINIA RAILROAD MUSEUM: will present local historian Don Teter offering a lecture and portraying iconic artist 'Porte Crayon.' The presentation will focus on an 1858 artists excursion along the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will get underway at 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Darden Mill in Elkins, the site of the West Virginia Railroad Museum.
FUNDRAISER: Pig Pen BBQ Catering will be behind The Arts Center Thursday, Oct. 5, from noon to 6 p.m., Friday, Oct.6, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday, Oct 7, from 11 a.m. until sold out. Money raised will benefit The Arts Center.
LIVE MUSIC: Visit the Appalachian Forest Discovery Center on Friday, Oct. 6 at 4:30 p.m. for a special musical performance by Fair Play. The event is free and open to all. The Richmond, Virginia-based band will play in the second floor event space of the Darden Mill. Downstairs, the Appalachian Forest Discovery Center will extend its hours until 6 p.m. to allow guests to visit the Material Culture: Wood and Weaving exhibit.
LAP DULCIMER BEGINNER'S WORKSHOP: Come celebrate the Forest Festival by learning a new instrument. From 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, Oct. 6, the Appalachian Forest Discovery Center will host a free drop-in lesson on the lap dulcimer in the second floor event space at Darden Mill, open to beginners of all ages. Visitors are welcome to come in and out throughout the lesson as they explore all that the Darden Mill has to offer during the festival.
BUCKWHEAT FEED: will be Sunday, Oct. 8 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mountaineer Chapter of IWLA on the Files Creek Road in Beverly. The menu includes three buckwheat cakes or regular pancakes, two sausage patties (extra patties available), coffee and milk, and homemade sausage gravy made by Elinor Evans. ELKINS PURPLE MAJESTIES: will meet Oct. 9 at the Railyard Restaurant in Elkins. The meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m. and lunch will begin at noon. The menu for lunch will consist of pot roast with all the trimmings and a special dessert. Games will be played and prizes won with special drawings. FALL FESTIVAL: The Tennerton United Methodist Church will be holding their 27th annual Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 14,, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come out for homemade apple butter, baked goods, trash 'n treasures, and hot dogs. The proceeds will benefit church projects.
BROWN BAG CONCERT: The Arts Center will host a Brown Bag Concert, on Wednesday, Oct. 18, featuring a performance by Jerry Pingley. The event is free.
PICKIN' IN THE PARK: Pickin' in the Park will take place each week at Elkins City Park on Wednesday nights through the summer. Co-sponsored by the Augusta Heritage Center and Elkins Parks and Recreation. The Country Music Jam Sessions start at 4:30 p.m. in the Small Pavilion, and the Old-Time Music Jam Sessions start at 6:30 p.m. in the raised Sycamore Street Pavilion. Both events run for at least two hours and are welcome to continue until the musicians are ready to stop. All acoustic instruments are welcome, as well as singers, dancers, and listeners. USED BOOK SALE: The Friends of the Library Used Book Sale and Donation drop off. Every Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Davis Avenue location of the Library. Donations of gently used books, movies, games, and puzzles also taken at this time. All funds collected will go towards the new building fund.
