EDITOR’S NOTE: The Datebook is reserved for nonprofit, civic organizations. Unless otherwise noted, events listed should be considered free and open to the public. Because of numerous entries, items may appear for only one week. Entries appear in chronological order and as there is space. The deadline for submissions is 4 p.m.

LANTERN TOURS: will explore the darker stories of historic Beverly by a lantern-lit tour today and Saturday at 7 p.m. each evening. Check-in will be at the Beverly Heritage Center. The tours are presented by the Beverly Heritage Center. There is a cost for tickets.

BUCKWHEAT AND PANCAKE BREAKFAST: Randolph Lodge IOOF will host a sourdough buckwheat at the Lodge Hall on the Beverly Five-lane on Saturday from 7 a.m. until noon. The menu will include sourdough buckwheat cakes, regular pancakes, biscuits and gravy, sausage, eggs, milk, coffee or orange juice. Apple butter will also be available.

FREE MEAL: There will be a free meal 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday Valley Head the Calvary Outreach Center on 219. All are Welcome.

CEMETERY MEETING: On Saturday, Hemlock Community Mt. Olive Cemetery Association meeting at 6 p.m. at Mt. Olive Church. Revised by-laws will be presented to the association for approval. Officers for 2024 to be elected. The public is invited.

USED BOOK SALE: held by the Friends of the Elkins-Randolph County Library, on Saturday and on Oct. 28, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the old library located at 416 Davis Ave. Money raised goes toward renovation and expansion of the building which was severely damaged by roof leaks in 2021. The sale ends Oct. 28, then closed for winter.

MEAT SHOOT: hosted by VFW Post 5781 will be Saturday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the post home in Harman. Refreshments will be provided. The last shoot of 2023 will be held on Nov. 18. For information, contact Danie Ours at 304-227-4349.

HALLOWEEN CAKEWALK: will be Saturday at the Talbott Community Building on the Talbott Road. The kitchen will open at 5 p.m., with the cakewalk at 7 p.m. Proceeds will go to the Talbott Community Building.

TRUNK OR TREAT: One Hope Covenant Church of Elkins will be hosting their third annual Trunk or Treat from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the Elkins Railyard. Admission will be one can of food or pet supply item per family. Children and adults are encouraged to come dressed in their favorite costumes as they share in the fun and excitement of collecting candy, school supplies, and other goodies. ORDER OF THE EASTERN STAR: Randolph Chapter 74 Order of the Eastern Star October meeting will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge, 26 Randolph Avenue, Elkins. Monthly meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month. All members are welcome.

HOUSE TOUR TUESDAYS: The historic Kump House will be open to the public Tuesday afternoons through Oct. 24 from 3-5 p.m. New Wild, Wonderful Woods interpretive displays and upstairs rooms are included in the tour as well as a self-guided Tree Walk. The house is located at 401 Randolph Ave., Elkins (across from Kroger) and parking is available in the rear, accessible via Seneca Road.

RANDOLPH COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF RETIRED SCHOOL PERSONNEL: will meet Friday, Oct. 27, at the Steer Steakhouse, with lunch at noon and the meeting at 12:30 p.m. The program will be about Social Security updates and changes by Jane Hazer, a volunteer at the Senior Center. HALLOWEEN PARTY: American Legion Post 29 will be host a Halloween Party on Saturday, Oct. 28 from 8 p.m. to midnight. The event will feature food, music, and prizes. Post 29 is located at 326 Railroad Ave. in Elkins.

FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH COUNTRY STORE: The Women of Faith from FUMC will hold a country store in the basement of the First United Methodist Church on Friday, Nov. 3, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. – noon in the church basement at 315 Kerens Avenue in downtown Elkins. Reasonable prices for household, gift and holiday items. Special mission donations available for a homemade quilt, child’s log playhouse and gift baskets which will be on display in the foyer area next to the church office. Contact number:304-636-0660.

TUTOR TRAINING: will be presented by the Literacy Volunteers of Randolph County at the West Virginia Wood Tech Center. On Friday, Nov. 3 from 5:30-8 p.m., light refreshments will be served. GREENWOOD CEMETERY MEETING: will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5 at the Presbyterian Church in East Dailey. All relatives of those interested in the cemetery are asked to attend.

104th VETERANS DAY DINNER: will be at American Legion Post 29 on Saturday, Nov. 11. The social hour will be at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m. Veterans eat free. Guest tickets are available for purchase. A limited number of tickets is available. The deadline to purchase is Nov. 5.

GOSPEL SING: Horner, with the Kingsmen on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 6 p.m. Pastors Rick and Brenda Wyatt. Free attendance and a love offering will be received. Everyone welcome. For more information, call 304-613-9207.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT MUSIC: The Wednesday night Country Music and Old-Time Jam Sessions that were held over the summer in the Elkins City Park will now take place indoors until spring. The Wednesday night sessions will now be held at the Randolph County Community Arts Center. The jams are free and open to players of all levels. Those wishing to attend and just listen to music are encouraged to do so. The sessions are co-sponsored by the Arts Center and the Augusta Heritage Center. The country jams will be from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., while the old-time jams are from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. For more information, call 304-642-2369.
