DANCE: will be today from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Elkins-Randolph County YMCA. There is an admission cost for all over the age of 12. The band will be Bob Smakula and Denice Reese, and the caller will be Joyce Rossbach. Contras and a few squares will be called. No experience or partner needed. The dance is presented by the Elkins Barn Dance Collective and Augusta Heritage Center.
CELEBRATION: Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area invites the public to attend their event celebrating the retirement of longtime Director Phyllis Baxter. Help recognize her accomplishments and welcome this new era at an upcoming celebration Friday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Appalachian Forest Discovery Center (101 Railroad Ave, Elkins). Come and go as you please. There will be a presentation at 5:30 m. Light refreshments will be served. Virtual attendance will be available.
OPENING RECEPTION: The Arts Center will host an opening reception for two art exhibitions: D&E Senators Art Exhibition and "Revisiting Penpoctura" a solo Exhibition by Kevin Woodcock on. Feb. 2 from 5 to 7 p.m.
GROUND HOG FEED: The Central Upshur Lions Club would like to invite everyone to break that cabin fever and come on out to the 33rd Annual Groundhog Feed fundraising breakfast/brunch on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Banks District VFD / Community Center at Rock Cave from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. The menu includes pancakes and sausage, biscuits and gravy, coffee, juice, and milk. It is a freewill donation and proceeds from the fundraising event are used to support the club's community activities including eyeglasses and exams for those who cannot afford them, sight conservation education, projects in support of the youth of the county, and maintaining wheelchairs and strollers for use by visitors to the West Virginia Wildlife Center.
BROWN BAG CONCERT: The Arts Center will host a free Brown Bag Concert with Pam Roberts on Feb. 21 at noon.
FREE LECTURE SERIES: "Nature's New Deal – The Monongahela National Forest" lecture at the Kump Education Center Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. Robert C. Whetsell, U.S. Forest Service archaeologist, will present this second talk of the Woodlands Heritage Lecture Series focusing on the extensive restoration efforts that took place from 1933-1942 that created the beautiful forest we enjoy today. The lecture is free and open to the public. Easy access to parking behind the historic Kump House, 401 Randolph Ave. (across from Krogers) via Seneca Road.
