Science Club at Beverly Elementary

BEVERLY -- Beginning the second semester, students at Beverly Elementary School grades 3-5 were able to participate in an after-school Science Club.

The Science Club is led by Emily Alexander, a fifth-grade math and science teacher at Beverly.

Ms. Alexander started the club by asking the students what areas of science interested them and what they would like to do with their time in the Science Club.

Among the top answers were rockets and making messy experiments. Ms. Alexander decided to jump right in with rocket science.

She had them review materials and videos on rocket design and aerodynamics. The next week she asked them to sketch a rocket design and create a supply list for their rocket build.

The final weeks before launch, the students worked in groups and created their nose cones and stabilizers for their rockets using a 2-liter bottle as the base.

The rocket challenge involved keeping their "Eggonaut" protected during landing.

On Monday, Feb. 26, parents came to watch each student group launch their Eggonaut and rockets on the school playground.

Of the seven groups, two groups safely kept their Eggonaut intact, but all groups and parents had an exciting time watching the ingenuity of their students.

Ms. Alexander, using water as fuel, used a pressurized launch pad that allowed students to be involved in the pre-flight preparation and launch.

The launch experiment provided great moments of learning including the materials they selected, the rocket design, and the protection they provided their eggonaut.
