SPECIAL OLYMPICS FUNDRAISER: Randolph County Special Olympics will have a Vera Bradley bingo today, at the Beverly Fire Department. Doors open at 11 a.m. bingo starts at 1 p.m. Concessions will be available. FUNDRAISER: Community Fundraiser for Charles Nutter, going through his second round of cancer treatments, today, at 6 p.m. at the Tygart Valley Fire Company in Dailey. CHICKEN BURN: The Lions Club will offer a chicken burn to benefit the Elkins High School cross-country teams on today at the former IGA parking lot in Elkins from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. A $12 meal purchases a half chicken, beans, chips, desserts and a drink.
LABAN V. SMITH REUNION: will be today at noon at the Dry Fork Recreation Center. Please bring a dish to share, your preferred drink and an item for the silent auction. Disposable table service will be provided.
MEAT SHOOT: VFW Post 5781 will host a meat shoot today from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the post home in Harman. The next shoot is scheduled for Sept. 20. For information, contact Danie Ours at 304-227-4349.
FARMERS MARKET: The Elkins Farmers Market, located behind the Railroad Depot, is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Lots of parking is available behind the Summit Church buildings. We have a large variety of vegetables of the season, eggs, cakes, cookies, jams, breads, flowers, crafts and many more items.
OLD TIME MUSIC: Join in the first and third Mondays, 7-9 p.m. at The Arts Center in Elkins for an Old Time Music Session. Beginning musicians are encouraged to join in. BROWN BAG CONCERT: Wish Awake will be performing at the Arts Center on Aug. 20 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. for the monthly free Brown Bag Concert. Local performers Stephanie and Leskie Tompkins of Wish Awake will bring an original acoustic experience, "blending a variety of musical styles while bringing a high energy to the stage."
WEDNESDAY PICKIN' IN THE PARK: The weekly Wednesday traditional music jam sessions sponsored by Augusta Heritage Center (formerly taking place at Armadillo Flats on Davis Avenue) will now be held outdoors in the Elkins City Park. The acoustic music jam sessions will be held in the Small Pavilion (next to the rest rooms and the parking area) every Wednesday of the summer (weather permitting). Country Music Jams are from 4:30-6:30 p.m., followed by Old-Time Music Jams from 6:30-8:30 p.m. All levels are welcome, as well as singers and listeners. The weekly jam sessions are co-sponsored by the Elkins Parks & Recreation. Anyone is welcome to participate (no sound systems or amplifiers). There are public benches and tables, and those who prefer to bring folding chairs may. In case of bad weather, signage at the pavilion will show the way to an alternative indoor location, the rear entrance to the Community Arts Center. Thanks to Armadillo Flats and C.J. Maggies restaurant for allowing the jam sessions to take place indoors during the cold weather months.
RANDOLPH COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF RETIRED SCHOOL PERSONNEL: will hold their August Meeting Friday, Aug. 22, at the Homestead Community Center in Dailey. Set-up at 4:30 p.m. and a covered dish dinner at 5 p.m., meeting to Follow. Drinks and paper products provided. Scholarship Auction will be held. All Randolph County School retirees are welcome. SUFFRAGETTE TEA PARTY: Join for an afternoon of high tea, tours, music, and conversation on Sunday, Aug. 24 from 1-3 p.m. at the historic Kump mansion on Randolph Ave, Elkins. Learn about the brave suffragists whose hard work led to the passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. Also included will be home tours, delicious treats, hot and cold drinks, and door prizes. Attendees are encouraged, but not required, to dress in period attire. HIGGINS REUNION: The Higgins Reunion will be Saturday, Aug. 31, at Camp Pioneer. Gather at noon and odd will be at 1 p.m. Please bring a covered dish and come enjoy good food and company.
THOMPSON REUNION: The family and friends of the late Dillon and Hettie Thompson are invited to attend the annual reunion on Sunday, Aug. 31 at the church in Sully. Lunch will be served at 1 p.m. Meat, drinks, paper products will be provided. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish.
