ELKINS — The City of Elkins reminds residents that starting on Sept. 2, they will see a change in curbside trash collection rules as the City implements its first-ever garbage bag limit.
Approved by City Council on Thursday, June 25, Ordinance 345 amends Chapter 50 of the Elkins City Code, setting the following bag limits for weekly curbside pickup:
Twelve (12) 13-gallon kitchen bags, or
Six (6) 30-gallon large trash bags, or
Three (3) 55-gallon contractor bags.
Labor Day is Monday, Sept. 1. City Hall’s offices will be closed that day.
The City’s Sanitation Department will also be closed on Labor Day. Monday’s regularly scheduled trash pickup will occur the following morning, Tuesday, Sep. 2.
The City’s Sanitation Department announces that for August and September 2025, the free monthly bulk item pickup (one large item, such as an appliance, TV, or mattress) schedule is as follows:
For August 2025:
Thursday weekly trash pickup: Thursday, August 28
Friday weekly trash pickup: Friday, August 29
*Friday’s bulk pickup will be one week later than the usual monthly schedule*
For September 2025:
Monday weekly trash pickup: Wednesday, Sep. 3
*Monday’s bulk pickup for September will be two days later because of Labor Day.
Tuesday weekly trash pickup: Tuesday, Sep. 9
Wednesday weekly trash pickup: Wednesday, Sep. 17
Thursday weekly trash pickup: Thursday, Sep 25
Friday weekly trash pickup: Friday, Sep. 26
This free service is for ONE ITEM only, such as an appliance, TV, mattress, or piece of furniture.
To schedule and pay for a Special Trash Pickup, such as a truck bed- or dumpster-sized load at any time, please call 304.636.1414, ext. 1437.

Yard waste may be dropped off at the Street Department Garage at 1 Baxter Street Monday-Friday, 6:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Occasionally, the yard waste bin will be closed in order to transport the fill bin to a compost facility in Clarksburg, which generally occurs on Mondays and Fridays. The City will announce such closures on Facebook, but we encourage residents to call 304-636-1414, ext. 1437 if they have yard waste to drop off and wish to ensure the yard waste bin is open.
The Regional Task Force on Homelessness, Addiction, and Mental Health will meet Thursday, Aug. 28, 1 p.m., at the Phil Gainer Community Center. The meeting is open to the public. The task force’s August agenda is not available as of press time.
As of press time, the next Elkins City Council meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m. The agenda should be published online shortly after Labor Day.
