D&E celebrates Homecoming Weekend

ELKINS — Davis & Elkins College will celebrate its more than 120-year history during Homecoming and Family Weekend through Sunday, with a full slate of events for alumni, families, and friends. Highlights include athletic events, campus dedications, class reunions, and the presentation of the 2025 Alumni Awards, and theatre production of “Lizzie the Musical” today and Sunday.

This year’s honorees are:

Steven S. “Doc” Savage ’72, Distinguished Alumnus Award

William W. Nuttall III ’70, Tower Award

Ethan W. White ’15, Outstanding Young Alumnus Award

Alexander J. Torres ’13, Senators Community Service Award

Gary J. “Joey” VanDevender ’05, Professional Impact Award

Savage, a standout dual-sport athlete in basketball and baseball, earned a biology degree before serving 27 years in the U.S. Air Force. He later established the Steven S. Savage Endowed Athletic Scholarship, served on the Board of Trustees and helped launch the Senator Nation Endowed Athletic Fund.

Nuttall, a member of the 1968 and 1970 NAIA National Championship soccer teams, went on to a five-year professional playing career followed by four years as a college and professional coach, later serving as U.S. Soccer National Teams general manager. A six-time hall of fame inductee, he helped raise $1.6 million for campus athletics during his 12 years as a trustee, including two as chair of the board.

White, a 2015 graduate with a dual focus in marketing and finance and a minor in mathematics, has held several executive leadership roles, including chief operating officer and chief of staff, across a successful business career.

Torres, Class of 2013, majored in criminology and served as Student Government Association president. After three years with the U.S. Peace Corps, he now leads youth development initiatives in Texas focused on building social, emotional and critical-thinking skills.

VanDevender, Class of 2005, is a higher education leader with two decades of experience in student success, enrollment and global outreach. He earned advanced degrees from West Virginia University and Wilmington University and has expanded educational partnerships in China, the United Arab Emirates and India.

“Homecoming and Family Weekend is always such a special time at Davis & Elkins College,” said Wendy Morgan, director of alumni engagement and support. “It’s what being part of the D&E family is all about — once a Senator, always a Senator.”

Today’s events feature meetings of the 1904 Society and campus fraternities, the dedication of the EAST Trail System at D&E, and athletic matchups in softball and men’s and women’s soccer against WVU Potomac State and Salem University, respectively. Athletic Hall of Fame inductions will be held in the McDonnell Center in the evening.

The day also includes the Senator Spectacular, a silent auction and reception benefiting Senator Nation Athletics; The Hybrids, an ’80s-era alumni band, reuniting for a party at the Icehouse; a celebration of 80 years of Theatre titled “The Biggest Cast Party Ever”; and the annual Chapel and Memorial Service led by Dr. Franklin Tanner Capps, Benfield-Vick Chaplain.

The weekend concludes Sunday with a farewell brunch in Benedum Dining Hall, “Lizzie the Musical” matinee, and a final game of the “Red & Black World Series” held at Harpertown Fields.

D&E President Chris A.
