Gupta to be WVU Global Health Week keynote speaker

MORGANTOWN — The West Virginia University Global Health Program at WVU Health Sciences will host Dr. Rahul Gupta as the keynote speaker for Global Health Week 2025.

The event, “Health Without Borders: Innovation, Access, and the Future of Global Health,” will highlight how innovation, access and collaboration can shape the future of global health, reflecting the WVU mission to improve health outcomes in West Virginia and around the world.

The event will be Monday, Oct. 6 at noon in the WVU Health Sciences Center North, Room 1905, 64 Medical Center Drive, Morgantown.

For those who cannot attend in person, a Zoom option is available in order to watch the event.

Gupta is president of GATC Health, a $5 billion AI-driven technology company focused on drug discovery, precision medicine and predictive analytics.

From 2021 to 2025, he served as the first medical doctor to lead the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, where he coordinated the nation’s $44 billion drug budget across 19 federal agencies and was credited with making historic progress in addressing the drug overdose crisis.

He also previously served as West Virginia’s health commissioner under two governors and held leadership roles at March of Dimes.

Global Health Week 2025 events will be held at noon Monday through Thursday in Room 1905 of the Health Sciences Center, with lunch provided for those who RSVP to Cindy Stankos. An additional event is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday in Room 1909. The week concludes with a virtual-only session Friday.

Tuesday, Oct. 7, noon, Room 1905 — Lesley Cottrell, PhD, professor in the Department of Pediatrics, chair of the Division of Disability Services and director of the WVU Center for Excellence in Disabilities, “The Critical Role of Medical Providers in Global Disability Health: From Awareness to Action for Inclusive Care.”

Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1 p.m., Room 1909 — Dr. Maria Fernanda Zeron-Rugerio, international nutrition researcher, University of Barcelona, Spain, “Synchronizing Nutrition with Circadian Biology: Improving Global Health through Advances in Chrononutrition.”

Wednesday, Oct. 8, noon, Room 1905 — WVU Internal Medicine Global Health Track residents, “Internal Medicine Global Health Track Resident Experiences.”

Thursday, Oct. 9, noon, Room 1905 — Aashish Pokhrel, Sophia Ellia, Brianna Hodak and Chris Ivanoff, DDS, professor of restorative dentistry and director of global engagement for the WVU School of Dentistry, “Creating Smiles in Guatemala: A Dental Mission.

Thursday, Oct. 9, noon, Room 1905 — Bella Bock, senior nursing student, “Mediterranean Diet: A Healthier Path to a Healthier Life, Lessons from Spain.”

Friday, Oct. 10, noon, Zoom only — Storee Yzaguirre, assistant professor and internal medicine clinical specialist, and Laura Ehrenberger, clinical pharmacy specialist in infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship at the Medical University of South Carolina, “Global Health in Action: Practicing Pharmacy in South Africa.”
