Randolph BOE and D&E professor collaborate on ACT prep class

2 min read

A recent collaboration between the Randolph County Board of Education's Office of Federal Programs and Dr. Brian W. Moudry, a physics and math faculty member for 30 years at Davis & Elkins College, and owner of I'm Ready ACT Prep LLC, has provided 17 local RCHS students with the opportunity to increase their ACT math scores.

The classes, which ran for three Sundays leading up to the latest ACT test in December, focused on math content and strategies.

"For many students, the ACT Math is the biggest hurdle for them to receive the West Virginia Promise Scholarship or to attain their preferred college admission choice." Dr. Moudry said. "The questions seem like "school" math, but there are a lot of them, and they can be worded in unfamiliar ways. You throw in the time component of 45 questions in 50 minutes, and the pressure becomes overwhelming. Usually, they don't end up doing as well as they could have. I help them identify what they need to do, individually, for them to do their very best." said Moudry. "I give them a personalized plan of attack to achieve their desired score, showing them all the tricks and nuances of the test and how not to get hung up on particular questions. Then we practice and practice until we are primed to score well on the real test."

Moudry is thankful to Dr. Shawn Dilly, Superintendent of Randolph County Schools, and the RCBOE for this collaboration, and is hopeful of providing his insights to more students locally and regionally. "As a first-generation college student myself many years ago, I know what a college education can do for a young person, and I am glad to share what I can."
