ELKINS – Vandalia Health Davis Medical Center has named James Gainer, MD, as interim Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), effective April 21, 2026.

Gainer assumes the role following the departure of former CAO Ron Andro and will provide leadership and operational oversight as the organization conducts a search for a permanent successor.

Jeff Goode, Executive Vice President of Vandalia Health, said Gainer’s leadership, established connection to the region and understanding of local health care needs will help ensure a smooth transition while maintaining the hospital’s focus on patient care and community service.

“Dr. Gainer brings a strong combination of clinical expertise, leadership experience and a deep commitment to this community,” Goode said. “His familiarity with our organization and the region ensures stability and continuity for our patients, providers and staff as we move through this transition.”

A native of Elkins, Gainer maintains an outpatient family practice clinic at Davis Medical Center and is widely known in the community for his longstanding commitment to patient care. He formerly served as a hospitalist, helping organize the hospital’s first hospitalist program and serving as its medical director for more than a decade.

For the past 18 months, Gainer has served as Associate Chief Medical Officer at Davis Medical Center, providing clinical and operational leadership. Prior to that, he served as Chief Medical Information Officer for Davis Health System, where he supported clinical informatics initiatives to enhance care delivery, efficiency and the use of technology across the system.

Gainer’s clinical background informs his leadership approach, with a strong emphasis on quality, safety and patient experience. His ability to bridge clinical care and administrative leadership provides valuable perspective as he steps into the interim CAO role.
