BUCKHANNON -- With warm weather just around the corner, the Upshur County Commission met Thursday to discuss and approve a number of items related to summertime recreation and the Buckhannon-Upshur Recreational Park.
During their regular meeting, Commissioners unanimously approved park hours of operation and a fee schedule for the upcoming 2017 season.
Commissioners also voted unanimously to open the Upshur County Pool to the public on May 27.
Pool hours will run from 11:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday at a rate of $5 per person. "Family Fun Day" will be Sunday from 12:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. at a rate of $3 per person.
Admission is waived for children two years of age or younger.
Group swimming lessons will run Monday through Friday at a rate of $50 per week, and private lessons for children under the age of four will also be available at a rate of $15 per 45 minutes. According to schedule, group swim lessons will be offered hourly starting at 9:15 a.m. and ending at 11:15 a.m.
The closing date is scheduled for Saturday, August 12.
Benjamin Hummer was approved as a 2017 lifeguard at the recreational facility.
According to a memorandum from Tabatha Perry,
assistant county administrator, Hummer will begin work on or around May 14, starting at an hourly wage of $9.05 per hour.
The Buckhannon Swim Club submitted a request for the use of the Buckhannon-Upshur Recreational Park pool for the purpose of swim practice and swim meets. The Commission unanimously approved this request.
In other business:
• Upshur County Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the advertisement for a dispatch position at the Upshur County E-911 Communications Center. The advertisement will be published in local newspapers in hopes of finding the most qualified applicant.
• In a unanimous vote, Commissioners approved a permit renewal for the Lewis-Upshur Animal Control Facility to handle controlled substances for a period beginning July 1, 2017 and ending June 30, 2018.
Commissioner Troy Brady was absent from the meeting and did not vote on any presented items.
