ELKINS -- The Randolph County Commission voted to give funding to the Tygarts Valley High School Band this week.

Former Randolph County Board of Education member Harvey Taylor requested funding on behalf of the band for the purchase of a new trailer.

"I remember going to a football game four or five years ago, and they had 10 or 12 people. They're up to 50 kids this year," said Taylor, adding that he projects that number will be close to 60 next year.

"That's a blessing for our school," he said.

Taylor added that the trailer the band currently uses is "very old" and in need of replacement.

"I remember being a booster president 10, 12, 15 years ago. They bought that thing used then," he said.

Taylor noted the new, light trailer that the band wishes to purchase would cost $8,550 with a required down payment of $3,000 and would be built "from the axles up."

"They're winning competitions. They're trying to go do what they can do. This is the first time I've known of the band asking for anything from anybody," said Taylor.

A fundraiser for the band is set for Feb. 15 at the Dailey Fire Hall.

Commissioners Mark Scott and Chris See voted to give $1,500 from the courthouse contractual fund toward the purchase of the trailer, while Commissioner David Kesling was out of state on business at the time of the meeting.
