Second CommUnity Table event planned

By Eliana McCutcheon 2 min read

ELKINS -- The second annual CommUnity Table event will be held on Davis Avenue in downtown Elkins from 5:30-7 p.m. Jan. 7.

Tables and chairs will line Davis Avenue in front of Beander's. The event will be hosted as a collaboration between Elkins Main Street and Beander's.

The concept of the CommUnity Table was created through the inspiration of the story of "Stone Soup." The book tells the story of a community coming together to create a meal to feed soldiers passing through their town. This story teaches the value of sharing and what a large impact one small act of kindness can make, especially when the community comes together.

Elkins Main Street is asking 15 restaurants or food service providers to bring 50 servings of either soup (approximately two to three gallons) or bread to the table. The overall mission is to feed the masses and come together as a restaurant community.

Last year, hot soup and bread was served to 125 community members outdoors in spite of cold weather. This year, the goal is to serve between 350 to 500 community members. with the help of the community. Officials say this is the perfect opportunity to come together to provide a hot meal to the members of our community.

"What started as a vision has turned into one of the most talked-about events for Elkins Main Street," said Madalyn Humphrey, director of Elkins Main Street.

"Andrea Kniffen and Desire Watson are an inspiration to work with on this project. They see how important it is to bring the community together if we want to move forward together," she said.

"This event is also strategically placed at a time when things start to slow down, the cold keeps people inside away from neighbors and friends, and so many are in need of a hot meal," Humphrey said. "The Community Table captures the selflessness of our hometown and fill our streets with joy."
