ELKINS -- A Valley Head woman is facing a felony charge after allegedly shoplifting a backpack from the Elkins Walmart store.

Samantha Lynn Nelson, 32, is charged with third offense shoplifting. Her bond was set at $10,000 by Randolph County Magistrate Judge Mike Dyer.

According to the criminal complaint filed by Deputy B.M. Roy of the Randolph County Sheriff's Office, the officer responded to Walmart on Jan. 5 in reference to a shoplifting and, upon arrival, spoke to an employee. The report states that the employee advised Roy that he had observed a male and female subject enter the sporting goods department, at which time the male selected a black backpack and handed it to the female, later identified as Nelson, who placed it on her shoulder-- further stating that the subjects proceeded to the self-checkout area and made no attempt to scan the bag.

According to the report, the employee went on to state that he stopped the subjects as they were exiting the building, at which time Nelson admitted that it would be her third offense for shoplifting and handed the bag to the employee. The report states that after being advised by the employee that law enforcement had been notified of the incident, both Nelson and the male subject exited the building and fled in a silver Jeep.

On Jan. 18, Roy was able the locate the vehicle in Montrose, at which time he made contact with the owner of the vehicle and was advised that the owner had dropped off and picked up Nelson and the male subject in the Jeep that was identified at the scene, the report states.

According to the complaint, Roy found that Nelson had been convicted of first offense shoplifting in 2015 and second offense shoplifting twice in 2016 upon a review of her criminal history.

If convicted, Nelson could be fined $500 and imprisoned for one to 10 years.
