ELKINS -- An Elkins woman is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly stealing a checkbook.
Melanie Michelle Evans, 38, is charged with five counts of forgery/uttering, Her bond was set for $500 by Randolph County Magistrate Judge Ben Shepler.
According to the criminal complaint filed by Senior Patrolman W.D. Butcher of the Elkins Police Department, on October 11, the officer made contact with a male subject in the lobby of Elkins Police Department who advised that he was unable to withdraw money from an ATM due to lack of funds. The report states that after going to his financial institution to resolve the transaction denial, the man was informed that he had multiple checks returned from the Elkins Shop 'N Save for lack of funds; after he reviewed the checks, he was able to determine that he did not write the checks for the amounts shown and that the signature on them was not his.
The report states that the checks were written in the amounts of $43.89, $30.76, $63.55, $56.90 and $55.82.
According to the report, the alleged victim advised Butcher that he had let Evans into his residence to clean for him and receive payment for her services but suspected that she had taken his checkbook at some point.
The report states that Butcher received a statement from the alleged victim in addition to copies of the returned checks which has the alleged victim's name "signed for endorsement which did not coincide with his signature."
"I then went to Shop N Save and spoke with the manager on duty who was aware of the incident," said Butcher. "She did confirm that it was Evans passing the checks through the business."
