BUCKHANNON -- A man who was arrested earlier this week for allegedly setting off an explosive device in someone's yard added more charges Tuesday when he tried to put a state trooper in a headlock.
William John Clark, 62, was arrested for battery on an officer and obstructing an officer, both misdemeanors, on Tuesday by First Sgt. J.C. Saurino with the West Virginia State Police Special Response Team. The team went to Clark's residence Tuesday to execute a federal warrant, according to the criminal complaint in the Upshur County Magistrate Clerk's office.
Clark met the state troopers at the door of his residence on the Abbott Road where officers announced they were serving the search warrant, the complaint states. However, Clark allegedly refused to come down the steps and began to back from the door towards his residence.
After he was grabbed by one of the state troopers, Clark allegedly forcefully pushed the officer, breaking the grasp of the officer and then attempted to put the officer in a headlock. Clark then had to be forcefully pulled from the residence and secured in restraints, according to the criminal complaint.
Magistrate Kay Hurst set bond at $10,000 for the misdemeanors. Clark is being held on no bond for a federal charge.
A conviction for battery on an officer carries one month to one year in jail and/or fines up to $500. Obstructing/resisting arrest carries imprisonment of up to one year and/or a fine from $50 to $500.
