City: Senior Patrolman Sayre has non-life-threatening injuries

ELKINS -- An Elkins Police Department officer was shot in downtown Elkins Thursday evening while attempting to make an arrest.
A press release from the City of Elkins at 8:49 p.m. Thursday reads, "An Elkins police officer received non-life-threatening injuries while effecting an arrest tonight around 7:30 p.m.
"Senior Patrolman Daniel Sayre, age 25 and an Elkins Police Department officer since 2015, was shot and is being transported by helicopter to Morgantown. A suspect is in custody."
Dozens of onlookers gathered near the corner of First Street and Henry Avenue following the reports of the shooting. Emergency personnel with the Elkins Fire Department and the Randolph County Emergency Squad were on scene.
Police officers with the Randolph County Sheriff's Office and the West Virginia State Police helped to secure the scene. Police tape was used to block off First Street at the intersection with Henry Avenue and near the intersection of First Street and John Street.
Officers could be seen standing near an alley connecting Second Street with First Street. Cones were placed at the intersection of the ally and law enforcement officials spoke with several residents.
Sayre was transported by the emergency squad to Davis Medical Center, where he was then taken to Morgantown by helicopter.
Elkins Mayor Van Broughton was on scene as the helicopter left Davis Medical Center. In a phone interview with The Inter-Mountain, Broughton praised the EPD and shared best wishes for Sayre's recovery.
"Prayers are going out for the Officer Daniel Sayre, his family and friends, and the the EPD and all law enforcement officers and first responders," Broughton said. "The EPD does a great job 24/7 and put their lives on the line every second of every day. We wish Officer Sayer a 100 percent and speedy recovery."
