Harper wins magistrate seat; incumbent BOE members re-elected

ELKINS -- The race for Randolph County Sheriff is set for the general election this fall after Randolph County residents cast their ballots on Tuesday in the primary election.
Republican Robert R. "Rob" Elbon Jr. will take on Democrat J.J. "Jim" Webley during the general election on Nov. 3.
On the Republican ticket, Elbon received 2,175 votes, topping challenger John K. Miller with 757 votes.
"I would like to thank the voters of Randolph County for giving me the Republican nomination," Elbon said Tuesday night. "I will continue to work this fall and strive to take Randolph County back."
Elbon resigned as Randolph County Magistrate in January to run for sheriff. Elbon has worked as a correctional officer and was a Randolph County Sheriff deputy for 10 years.
Webley won the Democratic nomination by topping former Randolph County Sheriff Jack D. Roy. Webley received 2,185 votes to Roy's 1,892.
"I want to thank all my supporters for coming out today and having faith in me," Webley said. "I think we will do even better in the fall.
Webley worked for the Randolph County Sheriff's Department for 16 years and for five of those years he acted as chief deputy. Webley also worked for the United States Marshall Service for six years, and has been employed as an investigator for the past 23 years for the Kroger Company.
Current Randolph County Sheriff Mark Brady could not run for reelection again due to the term limit on the seat.
Results are unofficial until the vote is canvassed.

MAGISTRATE
A new Randolph County Magistrate is set take office following the primary election on Tuesday. Tracy Harper is looking forward to holding her first public office.
"I am very excited," Harper told The Inter-Mountain Tuesday evening. "I am ready to help the citizens of Randolph County. I am so thankful for the residents that got me to this position. I thank them for their support"
Harper won the Division 1 Magistrate seat over challenger Michele Hommena VanMeter. Harper received 4,333 votes to VanMeter's 2,884. She will take over the seat vacated by Robert "Rob" Elbon, so that he could run for Randolph County Sheriff.
"I want to congratulate Tracy," VanMeter said Tuesday evening. "She campaigned very well and I wish her the best. She will be an excellent magistrate."
Incumbent Michael "Mike" Dyer ran unopposed for Division 2 and received 6,432 votes.
Incumbent Benjamin E. Shepler received 6,433 votes running unopposed for Division 3.

RANDOLPH COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION
In the nonpartisan Randolph County Board of Education County race two seats were available, one in the Elkins District and one in the Tygart District. Voters could vote for no more than two.
Incumbent BOE members Amanda Smith and Rachel Anger retained their seats, topping challenger Harvey Taylor.
Smith, of Mill Creek, who currently serves as the president of the Randolph County Board of Education ran in the Tygart District and received 3,799 votes. Anger, of Elkins, the current BOE vice-president, ran for reelection in the Elkins District. She received 5,172 votes.
Taylor, of Dailey, a former BOE member, also ran in the Tygart District and received 2,748 votes. There were also 20 votes for write-in candidates.

∫ On the Republican ticket, President Donald J. Trump won in Randolph County receiving 2,975 votes. Challengers Bob Ely got 20 votes; Roque "Rocky" De La Fuente received 12 votes; Joe Walsh took in 47 votes; Matthew John Matern received 19 votes; and Bill Weld got 38 votes.
∫ On the Democratic ballot, Joseph R. Biden received 2,166 votes; Tom Steyer got 42; Michael Bennett received 45; Elizabeth Warren took 122 votes; Michael R. Bloomberg received 85; Amy Klobuchar took in 58; David Lee Rice got 552 votes; Tulsi Gabbard received 102 votes; Andrew Yang took in 27; Bernie Sanders received 365; Pete Buttigieg received 60; and Deval Patrick took 29 votes

∫ On the Republican ticket, U.S. Sen. Shelley More Captio received 2,622 votes while challengers Allen Whitt received 254 and Larry Eugene Butcher took in 188 votes.
∫ On the Democratic ticket Paula Jean Swearengin received 1,519 votes; Richard N. Ojeda II got 1,093; and Richie Robb took in 934 votes.
U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES 2ND DISTRICT
∫ Incumbent Alex X. Mooney received 2,248 votes besting Matthew Hahn with 684 votes on the Republican ticket.
∫ Democrat Cathy Kunkel ran unopposed and received 3,059 votes.
GOVERNOR
∫ Gov. Jim Justice topped challengers on the Republican ticket. Justice received 2,271 votes. Challengers Michael "Mike" Folk received 309 votes; Brooke Lunsford received 21; Doug Six took in 44 votes; Charles R. Sheedy Sr. got 15 votes; Shelby Jean Fitzhugh got 29 votes; and Woody Thrasher took in 446 votes.
∫ On the Democratic ticket, Stephen Smith took in 1,844 votes; Douglas Hughes took in 137; Ben Salango got 1,217 votes; Ron Strollings received 275; and Jody Murphy received 344.
SECRETARY OF STATE
∫ Incumbent Mac Warner ran unopposed on the Republican ballot and received 2,619 votes.
∫ Natalie Tennant ran unopposed on the Democratic ballot and took in 3,689 votes.

∫ John "JB" McCuskey ran unopposed on the Republican ballot ant took in 2,501 votes
∫ Mary Ann Roebuck Claytor ran unopposed on the Democratic ballot and received 3,192 votes.
