Upshur sheriff honors deputies, staff

BUCKHANNON -- Upshur County Sheriff David Coffman recognized the hard work of the county law enforcement and court security staff during the COVID-19 pandemic and for the last several years in a special ceremony.
"This is a celebration," he said. "It's not my celebration. It's a celebration for all your hard work and all you do for Upshur County."
Coffman is nearing the end of his two-term limit and will retire Dec. 31.
"I'm very proud and very honored to have had the opportunity to work with you," he said. "Your hard work and dedication to your profession is overwhelming."
Cpl. Tyler Gordon was presented with an Award of Merit for outstanding and meritorious service to the citizens of Upshur County.
The award came for Gordon's exemplary actions on July 21, 2016. when he acted quickly and professionally in the discharge of his duties while answering a 911 call when a suspect retaliated with life-threatening force.
Gordon was promoted earlier to corporal from deputy.
Five other deputies also now sport new ranks.
"This is something I have wanted to do for the last couple years as payback for all your hard work," Coffman said.
After working with the Upshur County Commission for the last couple years, Coffman said he was able to receive money this year for a small pay raise to go with the promotions.
The new deputy ranks are Capt. Mark Davis, Lt. Marshall Powers, Sgt. Theron Caynor, Sgt. Rodney Rolenson and Sgt. Dewaine Linger.
Jim Vance was promoted to supervisor of court security.
"What he is very, very good at is dealing and working with the public," Coffman said of Vance. "That is very important. I don't know of anyone out here on the street that doesn't like him. I don't know of this person disliking anybody. He is just a great person and a great leader. We appreciate everything you do, Jim."
Ruth Hawkins, the seamstress for the department, was presented with a special accolade for her work.
In addition, all deputies, the Upshur County animal control officer and court security staff were presented with a special pin for their work in the COVID-19 pandemic.
"It's not only been a hardship here at the office but you also take it home," Coffman said. "I know it's a hardship on the families."
