Throughout downtown Philippi, flowers continue to create beauty and acknowledge civic pride. Two areas are at the entrance to the Philippi Post Office parking lot and in front of the Philippi City Hall.
The parking lot flowers are a mixture of short varieties of marigolds and zinnias and taller cosmos. Patty Yocum and Alice Shreve are the gardeners who have tilled the soil, planted the seeds, weeded the beds, and treated all visitors to the parking lot to a colorful display of summer beauty.
Cosmos and marigolds are beginning to take center stage in the planting area in front of City Hall. Earlier this summer, vibrant yellow stella de oro day lilies lifted their heads to the sun providing a burst of sunshine to all who passed by. Tending this garden are Tammy Stemple and Carol Marko.
All the gardeners are members of the Philippi Beautification Volunteers. This group of civic-minded volunteers has been caring for the flowers throughout town for the past three years. The volunteers are especially grateful to the anonymous benefactor who started the organization and who continues to help with its work and to the city of Philippi for its regular watering of all the flowers.
PBV is happy to welcome new volunteers to its work. Anyone interested in helping with the flowers should contact the organization via its Facebook page.
