BOWDEN — Two people were seriously injured and a truck was totaled in an early morning accident Thursday.

The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single-vehicle accident at 6:45 a.m. Thursday on Old Route 33 in Bowden that resulted in both occupants being seriously injured and transported by Health Net to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

The truck, driven by a 24-year-old male from Buckhannon, ran off the road on the right and struck a utility pole and tree, police said. The vehicle, which also contained a 21-year-old male passenger also from Buckhannon, then flipped on its side and slid down an embankment before coming to rest on another tree at the bottom of the hill.

The bed came off the truck before it came to a rest and landed in the Shavers Fork River, police said.

One of the occupants had to be extricated from the truck. The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Elkins Fire Department and Randolph County Emergency Squad at the scene.

No further information was available at presstime.

A two-vehicle accident on Corridor H on Wednesday resulted in one person being transported to Morgantown by Health Net.

A 2016 Ford F250 Super Duty driven by Nathan Mayle, 36, of Moatsville, was traveling eastbound on Route 33 near the 151 intersection when a 2001 Chevy Cavalier driven by Mykayla Arbogast, 25, of Mill Creek turned left in front of the truck, police said.

Arbogast’s car was struck by the vehicle, which then went off the roadway and hit a light pole.

Arbogast was ejected from her car and was later transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital, where she is listed in stable condition.

Randolph County Sheriff Mark Brady commended the quick work of first responders on the scene of the accident.

“We had a deputy that was on his way to another call when the accident happened,” he said. “He was on the scene minutes after it happened. So he and a couple citizen nurses who were driving by, along with an out-of-state deputy who was doing a transport, were able to help out right away.”

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the West Virginia State Police, Elkins Police Department, Elkins Fire Department, Coalton Fire Department, Junior Fire Department and Randolph County Emergency Squad.
