BUCKHANNON -- Upshur County's newest deputy is returning to the department where he first launched his law enforcement career a few years ago.
Seth Cutright was approved at Thursday's Upshur County Commission to begin employment Nov. 22 at the rate of $19.37 per hour to fill a vacancy created by a recent resignation.
Already a certified law enforcement officer, Cutright has been a deputy in the Lewis County Sheriff's Department for almost a year.
The chance to come back to his home county was something Cutright felt he couldn't pass up.
"It was nice working in Lewis County, but this is my hometown," he said. "It's nice to be in your hometown."
"The 22nd is coming up pretty quick," he said. "I have to finish some stuff in Lewis County and I will be ready to start over here. It should be an easy transition, just learning the new things they have implemented that are different from other counties."
Cutright became interested in law enforcement while bear hunting and having a conversation with Sheriff David Coffman, who first hired him, and is welcoming him back.
Although he has moved around, the reasons Cutright returned to law enforcement are the same -- helping people and "getting the bad guys off the street."
The deputy thanked the county commission for allowing him to return to the sheriff's department.
Commission president Terry Cutright said, "It's good to have you back, Seth."
Also at Thursday's Upshur County Commission meeting, the commission:
• approved a contract agreement for Fiscal Year 2021 Court Security Grant of $71,289 to be used for the purpose of enhancing and upgrading the county's court security.
• learned the financial assistance request for improvements to the former jail facility from the West Virginia Courthouse Facilities Improvement Authority had been approved. The maximum amount of the award is $97,039 with the county to make a 20 percent funding match.
Commissioner Sam Nolte recognized assistant county administrator Tabatha Perry for her work on the courthouse jail facility grant and noted that was $150,000 worth of grants received by the county.
