BUCKHANNON -- St. Joseph's Hospital recognized several departments during the month of October.

Sterile Processing Week recognizes the committed specialists that fill Sterile Processing departments in hospitals and make a difference in patient care.

"Most people do not know the central sterile department exists, said Kevin Stingo, RN, Director of Surgical Services. "Their job is to ensure that all the instrumentation in the hospital and all the clinics are clean, sterilized and are in good working order. They run multiple tests on the sterilizer, and other essential pieces of equipment daily to ensure they are working properly. Their attention to detail is what keeps our patients safe. They are the unsung heroes behind the scene."

Emergency Nurses Week honors emergency nurses for their commitment to patient care. "It takes a unique nurse to work in the Emergency Department", said Misti Elmore, RN, Director of the Emergency Department and Outpatient Services.

"They take care of extremely sick patients and provide them a caring, upbeat environment when patients are suffering from trauma, injury or severe medical conditions, and require urgent treatment. Since these specialists work in crisis situations, they must be able to quickly identify the best way to stabilize patients and minimize pain. ER nurses have been front-line during the COVID pandemic. The have worked diligently and tirelessly to provide care to the citizens of Upshur County.

St. Joseph's Hospital is also recognizing the nurses and aides that work in their Nursing Care Facility. These staff have been especially strained during the COVID pandemic, keeping residents healthy while having limited access to see their families.

"We want to recognize how hard the NCF staff work every day to give our residents the best care possible," said Whitney Burnside, RN, Manager of St. Joseph's Nursing Care Facility. "We appreciate their genuine dedication to the unit."
