ELKINS -- The City of Elkins is purchasing a new garbage truck after accepting a bid from Newlons International Sales of Elkins.
Elkins City Council voted unanimously at its most recent meeting to purchase the new truck for $182,603.
"It is an International truck," Elkins Operation Manager Bob Pingley said before the vote. "We've gone to automatic transmission in those kind of trucks, that's pretty much standard equipment that we normally get."
The Easy Pack G400 Sanitation Truck will be modified as part of the purchase agreement. It will be "painted to match the City of Elkins garbage trucks" and "unit lettered to the City of Elkins specifications," according to city documents.
"We do like Easy Pack, they've held up better for us in service than any other brand we've tried," Pingley said.
Second Ward Councilman Charlie Friddle asked Pingley, "Were you surprised when you didn't get any other bidders?"
"I knew it was going to happen at some point," Pingley said. "Newlon's has been successful for the last couple years with trucks. I think word gets around that they're right here local and nobody's going to beat their price. So yeah, I think that's what happens."
The new G-400 25-yard heavy duty rear loader features a 4-cubic yard hopper, with a 14,000-pound reeving cylinder with guides and latches.
In other city government news:
∫ Elkins Fire Department Chief Tom Meader reported that, during the month of November, his department was called out to 51 incidents, including three structure fires and 10 motor vehicle accidents, including three with injuries.
Elkins City Council will meet virtually at 7 p.m. Thursday.
