HAS hosts special holiday event

Highland Adventist School students took part in a Live Nativity scene at the school this month. A bonfire burned during the event and the public was invited to enjoy some hot chocolate and snacks.
ELKINS -- With COVID-19 nixing plans for a traditional Christmas program at the Highland Adventist School, staff members came up with an alternate solution so that students and others could celebrate the holiday.
The accredited school, which is located on Old Leadsville Road next to Highland Park, offered an event in which the students were part of a Live Nativity scene outside the facility. The Christian tradition, that represents the birth of Jesus, was a big success, said the school's principal, Cheryl Jacko.
"We are excited with the positive response and hope to continue the tradition, even when we get back to our usual Christmas programming," she said. "Our staff was puzzled about what kind of Christmas program might work in the midst of a pandemic and the live nativity was what we came up with. We are having a great year and are working hard to keep a normal program for our students "
The display was open to the public and many people drove by the school to take a gander at the scene. Others stopped by and got out of their vehicles to take a closer look. Those people were able to take advantage of the hot chocolate and snacks that were being served around a bonfire.
The event, which was live streamed on the school's Facebook page, included real horses and goats. Costumed students portrayed Mary, Joseph, the shepherds and the wise men in the nativity scene.
The Highland Adventist School is a private PK through 12th grade school founded in 1988. Its vision is "to prepare students for success in this world and the world to come."
