ELKINS -- Randolph County's first annual Christmas Lights Display Contest's final awards were handed out to all the winners recently.
Six of the contest's competitors walked away with cash prizes from the event's sponsor, the Randolph County Chamber of Commerce. A total of 18 other Merit Awards were given to residences and businesses.
"Our plan is to make the Christmas Light Display Contest an annual tradition in Randolph County," said Lisa Wood, executive director of the Randolph County Chamber of Commerce. "Added to other activities like the Polar Express and the Jingle All the Way Christmas Parade, we hope to promote Elkins and the county as West Virginia's Christmas Community."
Capturing first place in the residence category were Todd and Dorthy Simmons of 405 Gwendolyn Drive in Elkins. Their lights display earned them the top prize in the category of $2,000.
Earning second-place honors were John and Terry Teter of 102 Flyer Land in Bowden. The two walked away with $1,000. Rounding out the top three in the residence category was Thrayron and Russel Morgan of 20 Karlan Road in Helvetia. They collected $500 for their effort in the contest.
The Old Brick Playhouse was the first-place winner in the business competition and collected a check for $2,000. For weeks now, youngsters throughout the community have been talking about the Old Brick's Santa Claus display in the front window.
There was a tie for second place in the business category between Kathy's Decorating and Design and the Elkins Rehabilitation and Care Center. A total of $750 each was awarded to both businesses.
Wood said that the impartial judges were very impressed with the number of light displays throughout Randolph County. The judges also praised the effort put into creating the displays and the promotion of the contest's Google map, which allowed everyone to find the displays that were entered.
"We hope to have many more registrants next year," said Wood. "As we toured the county viewing all the displays, the judges and others commented on how many light displays there were that did not register. We've learned a lot from this first contest. Next year, we hope to add additional categories, additional prizes, and promote the light display tour regionally."
This year's contest was sponsored by the City of Elkins and the Randolph County Commission. FirstEnergy was a sponsor for one of the Merit Awards.
