Commission OKs iPad purchase

By Edgar Kelley 2 min read

ELKINS -- The Randolph County Commission unanimously voted to approve the purchase of iPad tablets for the Randolph-Elkins Health Department Thursday.

The iPads will be used for on-site documentation of COVID-19 vaccinations per the state and CDC requirements.

"We were approached by the health department a few weeks ago requesting that we may be able to help them get some iPads with some of the Cares Act funding we've received," Randolph County Commission President Mark Scott said during Thursday's commission meeting. "When they do some of their vaccinations, they are sometimes now done off-site, so they need a way to be able log their input."

Because all vaccinations have to be inputted into a system in real time, the iPads were a necessity for the Health Department, officials said. The commission agreed to the purchase of two iPads at the cost of $329 each.

Bonnie Woodrum, the Randolph-Elkins Health Department's infectious disease specialist, told The Inter-Mountain this week that she requested the iPads for the department.

The department's recent vaccination efforts have included a mass vaccination clinic Thursday at the Phil Gainer Community Center. Seniors age 65 and up from Randolph and five surrounding counties were vaccinated by appointment only during the clinic.

Also during Thursday's meeting, commissioners unanimously agreed to send a letter of support to the chairman of El Robinson Engineering, giving the approval for America's Best Block company to bring their operations to the area.

America's Best Block hopes to locate at the Reckart Equipment Company in Beverly, officials said.

"America's Best Block has been working on trying to come to the county for quite some time," Scott said. "They are currently doing a feasibility study and they've been working with El Robinson and part of that is letters of support. So this letter is a letter of support from the Randolph County Commission to the chairman of the company saying that we fully support and appreciate their proposed block plant in Beverly."

Scott said he hopes that ABB will be able to find the necessary funding and open a location in the area once all of the studies are done.
