BUCKHANNON -- A Pennsylvania teen has been arrested for bringing marijuana into Upshur County from Pennsylvania.

Shaliek Rashaud Cox, 18, of Washington, Pa., was arrested for transporting marijuana over state line, possession with intent to deliver and possession of firearm on school property, all felonies.

On Jan. 11, 2021, officers with the Buckhannon Police Department responded to a call of a removal of an unwanted person at West Virginia Wesleyan College.

While en route, officers were advised of Cox's description and advised that he had a firearm that he was claiming to be a BB gun. A Wesleyan security officer grabbed the gun which was sitting on the nightstand inside the dorm room with the magazine inside the firearm at the time. Cox had attempted to grab the gun from WVWC security and attempted to leave the scene but was stopped. After making contact with Cox, Cpl. Marshall O'Connor detected the strong odor of marijuana coming from his person. WVWC security advised that Cox was not supposed to be within the dorms as he was not an active student with the college. However, the security also advised that they detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from within the dorm room which was registered to Cox's girlfriend.

While searching Cox's bag, Marshall found 3.5 grams of marijuana in a "Big Smokey Exotic" bag and approximately .75 grams of marijuana in an opened "Sherb Money" bag to which both bags contained the language, "this package contains cannabais, a schedule I controlled substance."

O'Connor also found 6.2 grams of marijuana in a sandwich bag along with approximately $1,700 in cash and a set of scales containing a leafy residue.

Cox told officers that his girlfriend brought him to Buckhannon from Washington, Pa., on Jan. 10. The girlfriend corroborated this statement She stated she knew him to be a marijuana user but did not suspect him to have any when he was picked up as she did not want any repercussions from WVWC.

Bond was set at $15,000 surety.

If convicted, Cox faces two to 10 years in prison and/or fined up to $5,000 for having a deadly weapon on school property; one to 15 years in prison and/or up to a $2,500 fine for transporting marijuana across state lines, and up to 15 years in prison and/or up to a $25,000 fine for possession with intent to deliver.
