ELKINS -- Two Elkins residents have been arrested and charged after police allegedly found numerous stolen items from three local stores in a vehicle in which they were occupants.
Charles Law, 62, and Stephanie Teter, 42, both face felony charges and are both currently incarcerated in the Tygarts Valley Regional Jail.
Law was charged with grand larceny and conspiracy and is jailed on a $30,000 cash-only bond. Teter was charged with grand larceny, conspiracy and entering without breaking. She is behind bars on two cash-only bonds totaling $80,000.
Deputies B.M. Roy and A.B. Beverly of the Randolph County Sheriff's Office, along with the West Virginia State Police and Elkins Police Department, responded to Tractor Supply on the Beverly Five Lane Monday evening for a reported breaking and entering, the criminal complaint states.
While en route to the scene, 911 reported that the subjects who were taking the items from the store were leaving the scene in a white Chevrolet pickup and heading south on the Country Club Road, according to the complaint.
Officers located the vehicle in the vicinity of the Elkins Recreation Center as they were heading north on Country Club Road and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, police said. The truck began to accelerate, however, and showed no signs of stopping as it crossed the Five Lane and traveled onto Chenoweth Creek Road.
The vehicle then entered the parking lot of AT&T and Busy Beaver and came to a stop, officials said. The occupants of the truck were removed and identified as Law and Teter.
While approaching the vehicle, officers could see in plain view multiple items that were allegedly taken from Tractor Supply, the complaint states. Items taken were identified by a Tractor Supply manager and valued at $1,500. The investigation also determined that the suspects had also stolen items from the Elkins Walmart and Busy Beaver stores, police said.
The investigation also revealed that Teter had crawled under the fence at Tractor Supply and, with assistance from another party, put the stolen items over the fence and into the truck, officials said.
