BUCKHANNON -- A Pickens man already wanted on a capias added a felony escape charge when he allegedly attempted to run away from law enforcement Wednesday.
Christopher W. Tenney, 33, had been wanted on a bailpiece from Upshur County Circuit Court and had been on bond for a delivery of a controlled substance charge, according to the criminal complaint from the Upshur County Magistrate Clerk's office.
Tenney was a passenger in a Nissan Sentra stopped by Sgt. Theron Caynor with the Upshur County Sheriff's Department at Freedom Bank, according to the criminal complaint. Caynor attempted to put Tenney in the back of his cruiser when Tenney slipped out of his handcuffs and fled across Route 20.
Caynor called for Tenney to stop but Tenney continued running. In the meantime, Caynor fell due to the slippery conditions Wednesday, damaging his uniform and holster, the complaint states. Deputy Cole Bender and Buckhannon Police Department Cpl. Marshall O'Connor were able to apprehend Tenney on Orr Street.
Tenney faces up to five years in prison for the escape count. Magistrate George Riggleman set bond at $50,000 cash only.
• In a separate case, Brianna Wardrope, 25, of Buckhannon, was arrested for four counts of forgery and four counts of uttering stemming from an Oct. 15 complaint to Cpl. V.J. Pyles with the Buckhannon detachment of the West Virginia State Police.
An alleged victim advised police that Wardrope had allegedly taken several checks from her residence without her permission. One was passed at Village Hardware for $150. A second alleged victim from the same residence advised that one check had been taken from her and forged and uttered at First Community Bank for $100.
Riggleman set bond at $20,000.
Both Tenney and Wardrope were arrested in November 2020 for possession with intent to deliver heroin stamps, a felony. Those cases are still pending.
